ISO 27001 Integrated Management System Manual (IMS1)

For an organisation working to ISO 27001:2022, the IMS1 Integrated Management System Manual is the framework document for the ISMS. It is a combined ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 manual: Sections 1 to 5 cover the requirements common to the ISO management system standards plus ISO 9001, Section 8 Information Security Management covers the ISMS itself, and Appendix iv gives an overview of the IT network.

The manual is built around the information security risk process. 8.4 sets out how risks are assessed against set criteria, treated and reviewed, F-IMS26 Statement of Applicability records the controls chosen and the reasons for them, and 8.5 lists the topic-specific policies held in PP-8-100 Information Security Policy Procedure that put the controls into practice.

What the Manual Covers

  • Section 1 Integrated Management System - scope, with Annex A exclusions referred to the Statement of Applicability, context and interested parties, information classification labels and data backup in 1.5, and legal compliance
  • Section 2 Leadership, Commitment and Planning - P-20 Information Security Policy among the company policies, information security objectives based on risk assessment and risk treatment, the Information Security Lead and Data Protection Lead, management review, and risks and opportunities
  • Section 3 Resource Management and Support - competence and awareness, leavers handing back logins and equipment, IT systems kept licensed and supported, and communication
  • Section 4 Operational Processes - sales, purchasing, operations and change, with information security requirements for suppliers set out in 8.2.4
  • Section 5 Monitoring, Evaluation and Improvement - reporting and logging information security weaknesses and events, internal audits and continual improvement, alongside the ISO 9001 customer satisfaction process
  • Section 8 Information Security Management - commitment and the ISMS (8.1); arrangements for workers, data, incidents, suppliers, software and cloud services (8.2); IT equipment and physical security (8.3); information security risk management (8.4); and the information security policies (8.5)

Built for ISO 27001

  • The Statement of Applicability referred to from the scope, Section 8 and the definitions, so controls and exclusions are justified in one place
  • Threat intelligence collected at strategic, tactical and operational level and recorded on the information security risks register
  • Risk owners approve the risk treatment plan and accept residual risks, with the results reviewed at management review
  • Information security terms explained in Appendix iii, from access control and assets to non-repudiation and vulnerability
  • An Appendix iv network overview to redraw for your own network, or delete

Who Needs an ISO 27001 Manual?

Organisations implementing ISO 27001 use IMS1 as the top-level document that ties the ISMS together - scope, roles, the risk process, controls and policies. It suits SMEs that want a concise manual rather than a long set of ISMS procedures. Because ISO 9001 content is included, the same framework is ready if quality certification is added later, and where it is not needed some of that content in Sections 1 to 5 can be removed while most is kept to hold the management system together.

Included in the ISO 27001 Toolkit

This manual is part of the ISO 27001 Toolkit, where it is supplied with the IMS1 Manual Guidance and the registers, forms, policies and procedures it refers to.

Using the Manual

Start with the scope in 1.2 and the Information Security Lead in 2.2, then complete the information security risks register using the criteria it sets and record the resulting controls on F-IMS26. Check each arrangement in 8.2 and 8.3 against what is actually in place - the Statement of Applicability refers to much of Section 8, so anything removed there needs a matching change to it.

Related Documents

PP-8-100 Information Security Policy Procedure contains the topic-specific information security policies listed in 8.5, and IMS1 Guidance explains each section with the ISO 27001 clauses and Annex A references behind it. F-IMS22 Interested Parties Register and F-IMS23 Opportunities and Risks Register hold the context, interested parties and key risks that feed the scope and planning of the ISMS.
